30th September 2006
A cool night with showers reduced the catch in the UV moth trap. 6 Blairs Shoulder-knot, 5 Feathered Ranuculus, 4 Lunar Underwing, 2 Common Marbled Carpet and 1 Black Rustic and Large Yellow Underwing.

29th September 2006
Some nice autumn moths in the UV trap last night. 9 Lunar Underwing, 5 Blair's Shoulder-knot, 3 Feathered Ranunculus. 2 each of Common Marbled Carpet, Large Ranunculus, Large Yellow Underwing, The Snout, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Shuttle-shaped Dart, and Black Rustic. 1 each of Angle Shades, Turnip Moth, Silver Y and Rush Veneer. Also in the moth trap a probable Harlequin Ladybird (Harmonia axyridis) id to be confirmed. This appears to be the first record in the Somerset area of this invasive Asian species. There is a national recording scheme to monitor the progress as this Ladybird colonises the UK see Harlequin Ladybird Survey.

A good nights moth trapping in the garden with 3 new species. Red Underwing, Burnished Brass and Ni Moth all new for the garden list. I thought it would be a good night so ran the MV light which helped to increase the number and variety of moths. Also recorded Lunar Underwing 14, Square-spot Rustic, Dusky Thorn, Feathered Ranunculus all 3. Setaceous Hebrew Character, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Snout, Angle Shades all 2. Singles of Common Marbled Carpet, Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Large Yellow Underwing, Black Rustic, Willow Beauty, Small Blood-vein, Scarce Bordered Straw and the migrant micro Rush Veneer. A windy but very warm night produced in the UV trap, 5 Lunar Underwing, 3 Angle Shades, Feathered Ranunculus, Large Yellow Underwing and Square-spot Rustic, 2 Copper Underwing and Dusky Thorn and 1 each of Setaceous Hebrew Character, Turnip Moth, Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing and Lesser Yellow Underwing.

More of the same this morning in the UV trap. Large Yellow Underwing 13, Lesser Yellow Underwing 5, Flounced Rustic 3, Lunar Underwing, Light Emerald, Pale Mottled Willow, Willow Beauty and Canary-shouldered Thorn all 2. Centre-barred Sallow, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Garden Carpet, Turnip Moth, Common Marbled Carpet, Square-spot Rustic, Riband Wave, Feathered Ranunculus and Copper Underwing all 1. Migrants were 1 Dark Sword-grass and 1 Rush Veneer.

The number of Large Yellow Underwings dropping off with only 7 last night, and all of them worn so they will be finished soon. Also in the trap 10 Lunar Underwings, 3 Garden Carpet, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Square-spot Rustic, 2 Common Marbled Carpet, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Pale Mottled Willow, 1 each of Willow Beauty, Bright-line Brown-eye, Feathered Ranunculus, Angle Shades, Canary-shouldered Thorn, Flounced Rustic, Turnip Moth. Migrants were 2 Dark Sword-grass, 2 Rush Veneer and a Pearly Underwing. Other sighting today a Hummingbird Hawkmoth.

15th September 2006
A reasonably good selection of early autumn moths in the UV trap last night. 10 Large Yellow Underwing most numerous species, 5 each of Willow Beauty, Flounced Rustic, Lunar Underwing, 3 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 2 Silver Y, Common Marbled Carpet, Turnip Moth, The Rustic and 1 each of Cypress Pug, Feathered and Large Ranunculus, Pale Mottled Willow and Square-spot Rustic.

10th September 2006
Another cool night with nearly a full moon but a better catch in the UV trap. Most numerous with 12, Flounced Rustic, then 7 Large Yellow Underwing, 3 Garden Carpet, 2 Clay Triple-lines, Common Marbled Carpet, Lesser Yellow Underwing and The Rustic. Singletons of Yellow Shell, Double-striped, Cypress and Lime-speck Pug, Oak Hook-tip, Common Rustic, Centre-barred Sallow, Square-spot Rustic, Light Emerald, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Brimstone, Willow Beauty and a new migrant to the list a Pearly Underwing.

9th September 2006
The coldest night probably for months and a full moon, bad conditions for moth trapping and the results reflect this with 10 Flounced Rustic, 2 Large Yellow Underwing, Common Rustic and light Emerald. 1 each of Yellow Shell, Garden Carpet, Square-spot Rustic, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Vines Rustic and Marbled Beauty.

4th September 2006
Another 2 new species for the garden last night. 1 species Least Yellow Underwing not unexpected. The other Scarce Bordered Straw in most years a scarce immigrant but this year has seen hundreds if not thousands recorded in the UK. See photo below. Also in the trap (UV) Large Yellow Underwing 58, Flounced Rustic 7, Common Rustic 6, 2 each of Cypress Pug, Willow Beauty, Double-striped Pug, Vines Rustic, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Square-spot Rustic and Scarce Bordered Straw and 1 each of Brimstone Moth, Garden Carpet, Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Angle Shades, Turnip Moth, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Centre-barred Sallow, Orange Swift, Dark Sword-grass and Least Yellow Underwing. 1 other migrant trapped a Rush Veneer.

After nearly a month since the last another new moth species added to the garden list with a Rosy Rustic, a common species so it is surprising that I have never caught it before. See photo below. Also in the UV trap 53 Large Yellow Underwing, 8 Flounced Rustic, 7 Common Rustic, 4 The Rustic, 3 Double-striped Pug and Lesser Yellow Underwing, 2 Willow Beauty, Garden Carpet, Setaceous Hebrew Character, 1 Lime-speck Pug, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Yellow Shell, Pale Mottled Willow, Copper Underwing, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Marbled Beauty, Square-spot Rustic, Dusky Thorn and Cabbage Moth.
