GORDANO MOTHS - LOCAL PATCH REPORT 2007

Back to home page    Local patch moth year list 2007    Jan  Feb  Mar  Apr  May  Jun  Jul  Aug  Sep  Oct  Nov  Dec

In 2007 a small group of local moth enthusiasts known as the 'Clevedon Moth Group' is attempting to record as many Macro moth species as possible in the Clevedon and Portishead area. The end result will be to compile as comprehensive as possible list of the Macro moths that occur here. We start with a target list of species that have previously been recorded, but we would hope to add some new ones to the list as well as recording as many of the targets as possible.

The recording area or 'patch' is the 2 towns of Portishead and Clevedon and the countryside and villages nearby. The area covered starts in the north at the River Avon and runs south to the River Yeo. It is bordered on the north west by the Bristol Channel and in the south east by the M5 motorway and falls entirely within Vice County VC6 North Somerset.

The 4 main contributors, Paul Chapman, Howard Taffs, Jason Williams and myself run light traps regularly in our respective gardens and also use portable light traps in likely habitats. We also look for day flying species and use other methods such as artificial pheromones to find the moths that are not attracted to light.

Due the large numbers of species, for this year we are concentrating on the range of moths known as Macros. For the regularly updated list click here

On this page I keep a monthly summary of our progress and include photos of the more notable species. Hold mouse curser over photo for species and date.

2007 Macro Moth total = 369

DECEMBER

30th - CMG - REVIEW OF THE YEAR
With the year nearly at an end and the likelyhood of recording any more moths this year almost zero, it is time to look back at 2007. Statistically we have been out on the patch on more than 40 occassions, garden trapping has occurred on over a 500 nights. We have recorded 369 species, 68 species have been added to our patch list which now stands at 397. Some expected species were missed such as Clay triple-lines and Mullien Wave but on the other hand we recorded some surprising species like Shore Wainscot, Double Line and The Streak. In a year with almost no migrant activity an excellent effort by all concerned. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
