JUNE 2009, GARDEN TRAP ARCHIVE

A run of warm days with cooler clear nights and an influx of migrant Painted Lady butterflies raised expectations, however a reasonable catch in the UV trap but still no migrant moths. 6 Common Marbled Carpet, 5 Heart & Dart, 4 Treble Lines and Pale Tussock, 3 Garden Carpet, 2 Willow Beauty, Double-striped Pug, Angle Shades and Shuttle-shaped Dart. Also recorded singles of Green Pug, Flame Carpet, Poplar Hawk-moth, Setaceous Hebrew Character (photo below), Flame Shoulder, Alder Moth (Patch year tick), Ingrailed Clay, Shears (Patch year tick) and Tawny Marbled Minor.

The first Clay Triple-lines locally for 3 years recorded at my garden trap last night, also 3 variants of the common moth Treble Lines. Also recorded 11 Heart & Dart, 4 Common Marbled Carpet, 2 Garden Carpet and Buff Ermine, 1 each of Green Pug, Willow Beauty, Scarlet Tiger, Privet Hawk-moth, Flame shoulder, Large Yellow Underwing, Setaceous Hebrew Character and Nut-tree Tussock.

A warm overcast night, set the triple UV lamp trap in the garden. Numbers are increasing as you would expect in June and 1 year tick for the patch with the first of many Dark Arches. Also recorded 36 Heart & Dart, 6 Heart & Club, 5 Common Marbled Carpet and Willow Beauty, 4 Shuttle-shaped Dart, 3 Garden Carpet, 2 Common and Green Pug, Marbled Minor and Treble Lines. 1 each of Clay Triple-lines, Grey Pine Carpet, Double-striped Pug, Scorched Wing, Peppered Moth, Flame Shoulder, Bright-line Brown-eye, Green Silver-lines, Flame and Large Yellow Underwing.

Using the 3UV trap recorded overnight, 32 Heart & Dart, 5 Heart & Club, 4 Green Pug, 3 Common Marbled and Garden Carpet and Flame, 2 Mottled Pug, Pale Tussock and Shuttle-shaped Dart and singles of Silver-ground Carpet, Cypress Carpet, Small Waved Umber, Magpie, Willow Beauty, Barred Yellow, Double-striped Pug, Privet Hawk-moth, Buff Ermine, Small Square Spot, Peppered Moth, Large Yellow Underwing and Flame Shoulder.

Two forms of the Peppered Moth recorded at the 3UV trap last night, but they seemed a little confused about their camoflage, the dark one found resting on the white sheet and the pale one on a black wall (see photos). Also recorded Heart & Dart 33, Green Pug and Heart & Club 4, Uncertain 3, Willow Beauty, and Privet Hawkmoth 2, Brimstone, Double-striped Pug, Light Emerald, Flame Shoulder, Flame and Turnip all 1.

Last night recorded the following in the 3UV trap:- Heart & Dart 33, Heart & Club 13, Common Marbled Carpet, Garden Carpet, Green Pug, Double-striped Pug and Pale Mottled Willow all 2, Riband Wave, Willow Beauty, Brimstone, Magpie, Light Emerald, Peppered Moth, Elephant Hawk-moth, Flame, Flame Shoulder, Turnip, Uncertain, Setaceous Hebrew Character and Tawny Marbled Minor all 1.

A warm dry night, ran the 3UV trap. Recorded 9 Heart & Dart, 7 Buff Ermine and Heart & Club, 5 Uncertain, 3 Riband Wave, 2 Willow Beauty, Double-striped Pug, Garden Carpet, Flame, Double Square-spot, Turnip, Singles of Common Marbled Carpet, Pretty Chalk Carpet, Light Emerald, Scalloped Oak, Swallow-tailed Moth, Green and Haworth's Pug, Angle Shades, Privet and Elephant Hawkmoth, Tawny Marbled Minor, Coronet, Dark Arches and Poplar Grey.
