31st July 2007
To round the month off another garden tick with 2 Leopard Moths in the UV trap. Also recorded Large Yellow Underwing 7, Riband Wave 6, Brimstone 4, Willow Beauty 3, Buff Ermine and Dark Arches 2 and singles of lime-speck Pug, Common Footman, Marbled Beauty, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Nut-tree Tussock and Spectacle.

As a consequence of the clear cool night fairly low numbers in the UV trap last night. On the bright side it didn't rain. Following on from my first garden record of Small Waved Umber, another 2 in the trap. Also 4 Large Yellow Underwing and Riband Wave, 2 Common Carpet and 1 each of Garden Carpet, Rosy Footman, Marbled Beauty, Bright-line Brown-eye, Common Rustic, Uncertain, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Dark Arches and Nut-tree Tussock.

Small UV trap used as rain expected however trap provided a likely 3 new species for the garden list with Dingy Footman, Small Waved Umber and Lesser Common Rustic (TBC). Also recorded 14 Large Yellow Underwing, 6 Dark Arches, 4 Uncertain, 3 Brimstone and Shuttle-shaped Dart, 2 Riband Wave and Heart & Dart and 1 each of Small Fan-footed Wave, Scalloped Oak, Iron Prominent, The Rustic, Coronet, Marbled Beauty, Marbled Green and Grey Dagger.

In the UV trap overnight, Riband Wave and Dark Arches 7, Large Yellow Underwing 6, Shuttle-shaped Dart 3, Garden Carpet, Brimstone, Heart & Club and Coronet 2, Common Carpet, Willow Beauty, Scalloped Oak, Common and Rosy Footman, Elephant Hawk, Double square-spot, Uncertain, Rustic, Clay, Pale Mottled Willow, Marbled Green all 1.

Single UV and single MV traps ran last night until the heavy rain started at around 2:00am. MV - Riband Wave 11, Uncertain 5, Swallow-tailed Moth, Elephant Hawkmoth, Heart & Dart, Coronet, Bright-line Brown-eye all 3, Small Blood-vein, *White-spotted Pug, **Mottled Pug, **Haworth's Pug, Scalloped Oak, Large Yellow Underwing, Lesser Yellow Underwing all 2, Buff Arches, Brimstone, Common Emerald, Yellow shell, Willow Beauty, Small Dusty Wave, Garden Carpet, Early Thorn, Rosy & Common Footman, Peppered Moth, Cloaked Minor, *Dusky Sallow, Heart & Club, Sycamore, Double Square-spot, Grey Dagger, Marbled Beauty, Buff-tip, Vine's Rustic, Spectacle, Silver-Y, Beautiful Hook-tip, Snout (39 species). UV - Uncertain 6, Riband Wave, Large Yellow Underwing 5, Marbled Beauty 4, Dark Arches, Heart & Dart both 3, Willow Beauty, Swallow-tailed Moth, V-Pug, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Clay, Knotgrass, Marbled Green, Grey Dagger, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Rustic, Snout (18 species). A total of 46 different species with 2 patch year ticks* and 2 garden ticks**.

In and around the single UV trap last night:- 7 Uncertain, 6 Riband Wave, 4 Dark Arches and Large Yellow Underwing, 3 Heart & Club, 2 Garden Carpet, Fern, Grey Dagger and Heart & Dart, 1 V-Pug, Scarce Footman, Scalloped Oak, Clay, Flame, Miller, Knotgrass, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Pale Mottled Willow and Common Wainscot.

12th July 2007
The single UV trap ran again last night. As well as moths at the trap a very large frog (fat on moths). Moths recorded 9 Large Yellow Underwing, 4 Shuttle-shaped Dart, 3 Riband Wave and Marbled Beauty, 2 Dark Arches and singles of Common Carpet, Double-striped and V-Pug, Scarce Footman, Buff Ermine, Knotgrass, Heart & Dart, Bright-line Brown-eye, Marbled Green, Uncertain, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Flame and Grey Dagger.

11th July 2007
The single UV trap ran last night with a lower catch expected. 5 Dark Arches, 4 Uncertain, 3 Scalloped Oak and Large Yellow Underwing, 2 Marbled Beauty, Shuttle-shaped Dart and Heart & Club, 1 Riband Wave, Privet Hawkmoth, Lesser Yellow Underwing and Beautiful Hook-tip. Also a new species for the garden a Pretty Chalk Carpet (below).

The 2 Skinner traps used last night 1 fitted with 1 MV and 2 UV bulbs, the other with a single UV bulb. Not surprisingly the multi-bulb trap lured more moths of more species. MV/UV - 3 Heart & Dart, Dark Arches and Uncertain, 2 Riband Wave, Scalloped Oak, Peppered Moth, Elephant Hawkmoth, Buff Ermine, Large Yellow Underwing and Heart & Club, 1 each of Willow Beauty, Swallow-tailed Moth, Common Emerald, Common Footman, Privet Hawkmoth, Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Coronet, Small Angle Shades (photo below) and Cloaked Minor.
UV - 2 Large Yellow Underwing and 1 each of Mottled Beauty, Garden Carpet, Peppered moth, Privet Hawkmoth, Buff Ermine, Heart & Dart, Heart & Club, Double Square-spot, Uncertain, Rustic and Sycamore.
