MOTH TRAPPING - FRANCE (PERIGORD) AUGUST 2007

Another family holiday with the opportunity to Moth trap away from home and the prospect of finding some of the UK's rarer species 'which are common in France' and the possibilty of seeing species not recorded in Britain. The holiday home was chosen partly because of its location within extensive woodland in the north of the Dordoyne area of France.
I have trapped in this area before 2 years ago and 2 years before that in the Gironde area of France. The earlier trip was before I had a digital camera so I was hoping to catch up with some of the moths trapped there and have the chance to photograph them. I was fairly successful in this respect and recorded over 180 species of macro moth during the 2 weeks stay.
I ran both UV and MV lights on most nights of the holiday. The first week was warm and overcast with some rain and the second week had largely dry hot days with cooler clear nights and a fullish moon. I also recorded some day flying moths in the meadow adjacent to the holiday home.
