GORDANO MOTHS - BEYOND THE PATCH

FAMILY HOLIDAY TO THE DORDOGNE, FRANCE, AUGUST 2005

Mothing.

As usual I took the UV moth trap on my family holiday back in 2005. I had done this before but this was the first time I had a digital camera and was able to take pictures of the moths recorded. We stayed in a small gite in the Dordogne. The gite was superbly located within a large mainly Oak woodland but also had some grassland areas as well. I will have lost some moths as after the first few nights the trap came under daily attack in the early hours by some Toad's from the wood pile and a Robin that even learnt to go inside the trap to feast. I had to resort to getting up at 5 am and covering the trap with a bag to protect the catch. During a 2 week holiday I ran the trap most nights and totalled 103 species of macro moth, see below. Some of the macro moths found were new to me and not recorded in the UK so I used the excellent Moths and Butterflies of Europe and North Africa website to help with the id.

These are just some of the many photo's I took.
