A cool night so an ordinary catch despite using the MV trap. Large Yellow Underwing again the most numerous species with 27, 4 Vines Rustic, 3 The Rustic and Setaceous Hebrew Character, 2 Lesser Yellow Underwing and Flounced Rustic, 1 each of Silver Y, Angle Shades, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Orange Swift, Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Willow beauty, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Flame Shoulder, Centre-barred Sallow, Turnip moth and Treble-bar. Also 2 migrant micros Rush Veneer.

Another night dominated by Large Yellow Underwing with 70 in the UV trap, other moths recorded included 23 Common Rustic, 3 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 2 Vines Rustic and Shuttle-shaped Dart and 1 each of the following, Lime-speck Pug, Garden Carpet, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Willow Beauty, Pale Motteld Willow, Silver Y, Copper Underwing, Lesser Yellow Underwing, The Rustic, Marbled Beauty, Square-spot Rustic and Turnip moth. Also 2 of the migrant micro Rush Veneer.

Ran the UV moth trap in slightly better conditions than recent days. Large Yellow Underwing outnumbered all other species with 58, Common Rustic 11, Vines Rustic 3, Willow Beauty, Copper Underwing and Setaceous Hebrew Character 2 and 1 each of Silver Y, Lime-speck Pug, Marbled Beauty, Double-striped Pug, Common Wainscot, Orange Swift, The Rustic, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Turnip Moth and 2 migrants with 1 Bordered Straw and the micro Rush Veneer.

Best moth around the UV trap last night a Bordered Straw, also 7 Large Yellow Underwing and Common Rustic, 6 Willow Beauty, 4 Double-striped Pug, 3 Setaceous Hebrew Character, Marbled Beauty, The Rustic and Shuttle-shaped Dart, 2 Brimstone, Garden Carpet and Lesser Broad-bordered yellow Underwing, 1 The Flame, Flame Shoulder, Yellow-barred Brindle, Cloaked Minor, Common Wainscot, Flounced Rustic, Pale Mottled Willow and Poplar Hawkmoth.

Hummingbird Hawkmoth, there have been lots of these about this year but this is the first one I have seen in the garden.

I have just returned from a family holiday on Crete. My UV moth trap came along and was run each night in the garden of the Villa. The moth photo below (Problepsis ocellata) was one of the highlights from the trap. This is a taster with a full report of the moth trap results to follow.

Another reasonable catch in the UV moth trap. 15 Shuttle-shaped Dart, 9 Willow Beauty, 5 Double-striped Pug and Common Rustic, 4 Silver Y, Marbled Beauty, Riband Wave, Large Yellow Underwing, 2 Brimstone, Straw Dot, Turnip Moth, Common Pug and singles of Knotgrass, Dusky Thorn, Peppered Moth, Lime-speck Pug, Pebble Hook-tip, Common Carpet, Copper Underwing, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Bright-line Brown-eye, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Flame Shoulder, Lychnis, Cabbage Moth, Cypress Pug, The Spectacle, Dark Sword-grass and Small Square-spot.

Catch rates improved again with continuing good weather (UV). Another 3 new species for the garden with a Small Pheonix a Broad-barred White and 2 Dusky Thorn. I have been recording moths in my garden for 4 years and I am surprised how many new species I have added this year. Also trapped Common Rustic 15, Large Yellow Underwing 9, Shuttle-shaped Dart 8, Willow Beauty 7, Marbled Beauty 6, Silver Y 3, 2 of Brimstone, Flame Shoulder, Nut-tree Tussock and 1 of Double-striped Pug, Cypress Pug, Cabbage Moth, Copper Underwing, Small Dotted Buff, The Rustic, Marbled Green, Lychnis, Knotgrass, Yellow-barred Brindle, Dunbar, Riband Wave, Common Pug, Canary-shouldered Thorn, Smoky Wainscot and Ear Moth.

Warmer calmer conditions resulted in an improved catch in the UV moth trap. Common Rustic 10, Shuttle-shaped Dart 8, Large Yellow Underwing and Willow Beauty 5, Marbled Green 4, Marbled Beauty, Cypress Pug, Dark Arches all 3 and 1 each of Maidens Blush, Pepple Hook-tip, Turnip Moth, Pale Prominent, Silver Y, Dark Dagger, Chinese Character, Yellow-barred Brindle and the second garden record of The Gem, this time a female, july's Gem was a male.

With a run of much cooler and wetter days and nights a poor catch in the UV moth trap. Common Rustic 5, Shuttle-shaped Dart 4, Large Yellow Underwing 3, Marbled Beauty and Silver Y 2 and Flame Shoulder, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Scalloped Oak, Willow Beauty, The Lychnis and Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing (below) all 1.
